About MoCycle Productions

Why cycle on an indoor bike for 12 hours?  Well, on
September 17, 2000 our little 21-month-old son Ethan
was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.  He had all the typical
symptoms - excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss,
lethargy and sweet breath.  It was like a truck hit us as the
ER doctor gave us the news and walked out of the room
with us feeling shock, sadness, anger and confusion.
Ethan was immediately admitted into the hospital for
four days and we learned how to give injections,
count carbohydrates, respond to low blood and high
blood sugar, keytones in the urine and seizures.  We
learned how to keep our son alive.

It is now nearly nine years later, and Ethan gets his fingers pricked
8-12 times a day, inserts a tube into his belly for his insulin pump every
two to three days, measures everything he eats and drinks, and lives with
the side effects of low and high blood sugars.  We fight this disease every
day.  We hope for a cure so Ethan will not face a future filled with the
devastating and life-limiting complications such as kidney failure, heart
disease, amputations, blindness and stroke.

Every hour of every day, someone is diagnosed with Type I diabetes,
the most severe form of a disease that annually accounts for more than
$100 billion in health care costs in the U.S. alone.  It usually strikes before
the age of 30 but can strike at any age.  You can't outgrow type I diabetes,
and insulin is not a cure.

This is why we cycle today!  We cycle to bring awareness to the disease.  We
cycle to raise funds to support the scientists who are searching for a cure.  Of
course, we cycle to exercise and enjoy the benefits of challenging our bodies.  As
for me, I will be up on my bike all 12 hours for my son, Ethan.  12 hours on a bike
is nothing compared to what he lives with every hour of every day.

I thank you so much for your support and you time.  So, jump on and cycle away!
Start up a conversation with your bike neighbor, enjoy a bite to eat, take notice of
all of our wonderful sponsors, and have a ball!  You should feel appreciated as
you join in today and recognize how valuable each one of your individual
contributions is in the lives of those with this disease.  You just got us closer to a
cure!
